From the time of her arrival in Paris in 1925 to appear in "La Revue Nègre", the black American singer and dancer Josephine Baker soon became the epitome of Art Deco style and chic. With her sublime body, her hair lacquered like glass, wearing clothes by Patou and jewels designed for her by Jean Dunand, hers was a thrilling presence. She posed for and was photographed, sketched and sculpted by some of the greatest names of the 20th century, and her career as a show business headliner would last for fifty years till her death in 1975.

This CD begins with the complete long-playing album: "Josephine Chante Paris", which can surely be regarded as one of the first concept albums of its time. On it she sings a selection of popular and traditional songs connected with Paris, including "Mon Paris", "April in Paris", "Sous les Toits de Paris" and "La Romance de Paris" with Josephine's own theme song: "J'ai Deux Amours" a recurring link throughout.

Following "Clopin-Clopant", the next cluster of songs were recorded in St. Moritz. In these orchestrations and accompaniment one hears much more of an intimate musette influence. Josephine opens with a charming version of her old hit from 1930: "Ma Petite Tonkinoise", a highlight of her first revue at the Casino de Paris and also her first-ever recording for French Columbia. "Mon Manège à Moi" was already firmly associated with the great Piaf who had recorded the song in 1958, but Josephine's natural exuberance also bring it very much to life.

"J'attendrai" was originally introduced with great success in 1938 by three more of Josephine's contemporaries of French popular song: Tino Rossi, Jean Sablon and Rina Ketty. This number regularly featured in the Baker repertoire during the 1960s.

Also included are the haunting "Parlez-moi d'Amour", originally a worldwide hit for Lucienne Boyer in 1930 and Cole Porter classics "Night and Day" and "Begin the Beguine". "Come Prima" was one of several Italian songs made famous by Marino Marini and his Quartet. The CD ends with the naughty "Don't Touch Me Tomato", a song long associated with the legendary Josephine Baker.
