Only once could Ed Sullivan introduce someone by saying that her voice was the greatest that God had ever bestowed on anyone. For only one person could actor Ronald Reagan inscribe in her scrapbook: "Kate, You have the rights to ‘God Bless America', so I'll say ‘God Bless Kate Smith".

After Broadway's "Honeymoon Lane", a tour in "Hit the Deck" and back to Broadway in "Flying High", Kate Smith was first heard singing on NBC radio in early 1931 and her fame rapidly grew. She introduced the song "God Bless America" on November 10, 1938 and recreated the moment for posterity in the 1943 film "This Is the Army". 

No one had surpassed Kate's eleven weeks at the New York Palace in 1931 until Judy Garland broke the record in 1952, and Kate sold more war bonds than anyone else during World War II. She was such a staple on NBC daytime television that the network gave her a concurrent night hour. Kate had a radio, film, TV and recording career spanning 5 decades reaching it's pinnacle in the 1940s. 

The 26 songs here were recorded in the late 1950s in stereo and are now available on CD for the very first time. Naturally, "God Bless America" is included.
