Born in Detroit in 1924, Margaret Whiting grew up in a musical family as daughter of famed songwriter Richard Whiting and niece of vaudeville star Margaret Young. Johnny Mercer had been a close friend of her father's, and when he formed Capitol Records in 1942, it was only natural that young Margaret Whiting would become one of the first people he would hire.
In an era when most girl singers were members of a band, Whiting went straight to the top as a solo star, scoring such monumental hits as "Moonlight in Vermont," "That Old Black Magic," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "It Might As Well Be Spring," "Now Is the Hour," "My Foolish Heart," "A Wonderful Guy" and her father's composition "My Ideal." She even topped the country charts with a Jimmy Wakely duet of "Slippin' Around."
By 1959, however, with rock and roll controlling the singles charts, Whiting was more than eager to change course and pursue an album career with Dot Records. In re-recording her "Greatest Hits" for Dot, entitled "Margaret Whiting's Great Hits",
Whiting took the adventurous step of working with a new arranger and conductor, Russ Garcia, who was quickly making a name for himself as one of the best jazz musicians in Los Angeles. He gave the songs a fresh, modern sound without losing their original flavour, perfectly suited to the crisp vitality of Dot stereo and the artistry of a vocalist at the peak of her prime.
Among Whiting's additional albums for Dot was the collection "Ten Top Hits," recorded a few months later with Milt Rogers. This time Whiting interpreted songs initially introduced by others, but delivered in her own unique style. Both albums are coupled on this CD release with an additional 3 bonus tracks.
Margaret Whiting has secured her position as one of the most important and enduring of all female vocalists, a star for seven decades and one whose name is synonymous with great music. In a field that can be notoriously fickle, she has managed to remain both current and classic at the same time, continuing to win new fans while never disappointing the old. Like the songs she sings in this latest compilation, the sound of her voice will live forever.
